Abstract

Introduction: This study explored the effect of gamified assessments, specifically using Quizizz, on improving mathematics proficiency among high school students in a rural county in North Carolina. Persistent challenges in rural education such as limited learning resources, low teacher retention, and the digital divide continue to hamper students’ academic achievement in mathematics. Integrating game-based learning tools like Quizizz, which incorporates competition, leaderboards, and instant feedback, may offer a motivating and engaging approach to address these issues.

Methodology: A quasi-experimental research design was employed to compare mathematics outcomes between students who participated in gamified instruction via Quizizz and those receiving traditional classroom teaching. Data was collected through pre- and post-tests, quarterly check-in results, and end-of-course examination scores. Statistical analyses, including analysis of variance (ANOVA) and logistic regression, were used to determine the significance of differences between the two groups and to assess the influence of gender and socioeconomic factors.

Results: Findings revealed that 77% of students in the Quizizz intervention group achieved proficiency, compared to only 23% in the traditional instruction group. Gender and socioeconomic status were significant predictors of performance outcomes, suggesting that while gamified assessments benefitted all learners, their effects varied across demographic groups.

Conclusion: The study concludes that gamified assessment tools like Quizizz are effective in improving mathematics proficiency in rural settings. By enhancing student motivation and engagement, these tools help mitigate learning disparities associated with resource scarcity and social inequities. The results advocate for broader integration of gamification in educational policies and practices to promote equitable and effective learning environments in rural schools.
